Station 3: The Latest

Fire Camp Housekeeping 2026

7/29/2026

You ready to get this burn started with some informative emails!  I bet you are!  So many of you have been asking great questions.  I promise, I am not an ignorer, just holding out till you get this series of emails that will explain it all!! Let’s start it off with…

….Camp Housekeeping!:

1.  KINDNESS: We're starting with an important reminder again this year. You may have heard that camp is VERY full. This means we're going to be cozy.  Let's all be aware of our space, compassionate and kind to our fellow campers. Our neighborliness is core to Camp 3 culture.

2.  PLACEMENT LAST CHANCE UPDATES: Speaking of cozy, we have a request. Remember that pinky swear from camp sign ups?  Remember when you promised to fill out this pre-playa questionnaire? Now that shifts and SAPs are requested, we’d like your actual arrival date. And with your RV rented (or repairs sorted), you should better know the length of your live-in structure. Whee!

Do NOT fill out this form if…
  • Your info hasn’t changed since you filled out the camp application questionnaire.
  • You’re sharing with someone who will provide this information (duplicate data drives us nuts!).
Pre-Playa Questionnaire
3. KEEP INFORMED: How do you know what the heck is going on in camp before you arrive? On the camp website of course! What about once you arrive? Find the Camp Info table! See AMAZING whiteboards filled with information and you may also find an amazing volunteer. Go to Camp Info for camp events, the volunteer list, a map of camp, and how things work.

4. BAR: Bring something to contribute, here's the sign up for the Booze list! We need booze, mixers and non-alcoholic beverages to share (no such thing as too many sparkling waters).  And then use the bar!  It’s for everyone and it has ice, it has shade, it has music. What else do you need?  Make your neighbor a drink, maybe even make one for the folks cleaning up after dinner. Bring your own cup!

5. RIDE SHARE: Vehicle passes are not plentiful this year. Do you need a ride to playa? Can you offer a ride to playa? Check out the Ride Share list

6. EVENTS: We have events in camp! When we get a little closer you will receive a list of camp and ESD wide events. Look for these emails! Also find an active list of camp events on the whiteboards!

7. VOLUNTEER: We need you to volunteer in camp. We ask 7 hours (or 11 if a guest), but really it takes much more to put all this awesomeness together and take it down. Please make sure you and your guests are signed up to volunteer as much as your little selves can.  We need all the jobs filled!! There will also be a white board on playa near the info table to fill in any last minute jobs and in addition you will have an opportunity to sign up for volunteer work when you pick up your meal bracelet at the first meal. Our stunning volunteer coordinators will be facilitating on playa to make sure we have 100% participation this year.

If you requested a SAP for supporting pre-event build, you will be receiving those via email from me soon.

8. PRE and POST EVENT MEALS: People signed up for pre and post shifts will have a simple meal (breakfast and dinner) made available to them. You can find AM and PM shifts on the volunteer link above, please add your name! If it's crazy hot, we'll start early and have midday siesta, then more evening build. Scroll down for Monday, September 1 for the breakdown shifts.

9. LIGHT UP: Light your rig. The city makers have requested we brighten camp along the C and D roads so it looks less like murderville. Please bring some solar lights or whatevs to hang on your rig or put out on the road and help make Burning Man more friendly.

10. RV SERVICE/ GENERATOR: If you signed up for RV service or the camp generator, you will receive an informative email from me (Stefie). Generator is only for people who have prepaid before we arrive, no hooking in if you didn’t buy in. Please don’t ask your neighbors to piggyback off them, the generator is a luxury and expensive and it takes everyone buying in to make it work.

11. SHOWER: Your camp dues provide for two showers for the week. Shower time limit is 5 glorious minutes. Consensual shower sharing is encouraged as long as you stay within the 5 MINUTE RULE. Please remove all of your shower supplies when done (sharing stuff complicates shower maintenance).

12. MEAL PLAN/ WATER: For those of you on meal plan- meals start at dinner on Sunday Aug. 30th and extend until Breakfast on Monday Sept 7. We offer breakfast and dinner with an occasional unplanned lunch. On burn nights we eat early (something like 4/4:30) to accommodate the fire team. After the burn we will have a grilled cheese or something else spectacular available as a snack. If you are around pre or post event- plan to feed yourself unless you are signed up to help in camp (see #7 above).  We don’t offer drinking water- so bring your own (water fills are for RVs only)! Meal times are posted on the white boards (have I mentioned the amazing white boards?), so check them out when you arrive, I’ll have them posted by the first meal. These times are subject to change, so keep an eye out on the schedule through the week. We don’t save food for late eaters, if you want to eat- show up, we are cooking for all of you who signed up and food waste sucks!

13. LEAVE NO TRACE: Just like the rest of BRC- plan to pack it out. During your stay be sure to keep your space tidy and create no moop. When you depart from camp, plan an extra 1/2 hr to rake your space and gather any moop RAIN OR SHINE. Help your neighbors too- the footprint of camp is all of our responsibilities--we want to go green on the post-event moop map.  Let’s make it happen! Rakes will be available by the kitchen at break down. This was your second pinky promise in the camp sign up. Let’s keep those pinkies connected and get our moop mooped!

14. ICE: Want ice? Each morning, you can sign up and pay for bag or block ice. You must pay by 10am at Camp Info. Our amazing Ice Queen will pick it up from Arctica and bring it back to camp. Plan to be available to receive your ice or else it goes into someone else’s cocktail. 2026 Pricing: $7 for 10lb block and $12 for 16lb crushed. If you are ordering ice through camp, you’ll need to bring cash. If you want to pay with a card, you’ll need to go to Artica yourself.

15. COFFEE: Hot Shots is our dope espresso cart located near the kitchen. Coffee comes with your camp dues and hours are 7am to 10am-ish. Bring your own cup! Treats to share at the cart are cool to bring.

16. HEALTH AND SAFETY: Hand-Washing: Do you enjoy intestinal health?  While we can't prevent you from taking that shot from that sticky cup offered to you by a bunny under Blinky lights (am I speaking from experience? yes, yes I am), we can ask you to take care of yourself in camp. Radical self reliance, right? Well this year we ask that you take your radical self over to the hand washing station behind the med station to wash those funky hands of yours before meals. We will also have a hand sanitizer dispenser at the start of the food line- use it!

In the kitchen: We have a great crew of chefs this year. In the kitchen- they are in charge. The kitchen is not a hang out space or a help yourself space. If you are an eater, please abide by the rules of the line (servers will serve you, no fingers in the food, wear pants (thongs are cute, but an eating table is an eating table and keeping the teezy covered makes it safe for everyone), etc). If you are a volunteer in the kitchen- follow the lead of your chef, they will be your guiding light towards food safety (also come dressed to cook-so ALL your parts need to be covered). The kitchen is not open to washing your personal dishes or storage of your food.  THE KITCHEN DOES NOT ACCEPT FOOD DONATIONS (No Dumping your leftover food for us to deal with during breakdown).

17. PLACEMENT: Placement map, camper list, and instructions will be out right before build week.  As usual, plan to be flexible because things always change once we’re on playa. But rest assured, you’ll be placed by our fab team. If you’re pre-event you may need to move once our layout takes shape.

9. WHERE TO PARK YOUR CAR: If you’re not living in your vehicle you are required to move it out of camp. Keep this in mind as you pack because you will come into camp, unload and unhook, then move your vehicle. There is a staff parking lot just for this. Placement will give you directions and instructions. Camps that look like parking lots are no bueno and we need the space.

18. SHADE/ PREPARING FOR HEAT: We offer a mostly shady eating area and bar. We do not offer shade for tents, RV's, etc. Please be radically-self-shade-reliant. Prepare to live in very hot weather, very windy, very dusty, and maybe even rainy and cold (why do we do this?). It's the desert, we are the tourists. Don't underestimate what you need to stay cool (and hydrated).

19. REACH OUT: We have many new campers this year. Preparing for playa is an overwhelming process even for the very not virgins to playa. If you need support or have questions, please reach out and I'll be happy to help.

Camp culture, events, and placement emails to follow!

Until next time, much love,
The Camp Cor (this one's from Stefie)

Sign up to Volunteer at Fire Camp 2026

7/1/2026

Hey people!  The sign-up link is live, along with a message from Diane about the camp volunteer sign-up. We’re switching things up this year to help get some shifts covered midweek and to reflect the actual needs of camp and how people volunteer. A ton of thought and care has gone into this, and I appreciate Diane and the VC team for working hard to think about how to spread the load (Josh inserts joke) and to keep the camp volunteers from burnout.  The great part is--camp volunteering is way fun and a great way to meet new people and participate. One build shift and one meal shift will cover the base volunteering requirements for an ESD volunteer.

If you are coming pre-event and need a SAP, please first sign up for a build shift and then email me to ask for one. SAPs will be issued only for people building and will be dated for the day before your build shift.

Stay tuned for more camp communications like how to be a camper, RV services details, placement, etc.

Are you so excited!! We can't wait to see you!

...And a message from Diane, Volunteer Coordinator

Welcome all to Camp 3, the best camp on Playa! What makes us the best is the high levels of organization and participation in daily camp operations. Signing up for camp duties is an important step in keeping our camp a wonderful place to live during Burning Man. Thanks in advance for showing up.

This year we are asking those "plus one" guests who are not working for ESD to kick in a few extra hours around camp. This gives your ESD hosts more time to enjoy to Burning Man, given that they are already working notable numbers of hours keeping Black Rock City safe and operational.

Minimum requirements for camp duty hours are as follows:
  • ESD volunteer: 7 hours or more
  • Plus one (guest who do not work for ESD): 11 hours or more

Here is a crucial bit of information:
  • All campers must work a minimum 3.5 hours during event week of your total hours. If you are volunteering during set up and tear down, we ask that your total hours include at minimum 3.5 hours during the event week.
  • You may swap event week shifts with a friend for a pre/post shift, if they can cover your event week shifts. If you do this, please notify us at [email protected].

Kitchen stuff, the stuff of legends:
  • Weekend shifts are designed to NOT INTERFERE with burn festivities.
  • Those working kitchen shifts Saturday and Sunday at the end of event week will receive a free quality apron emblazoned with Marina’s fantastic art for the year, along with other surprise perks. (Queue applause).
  • If you are working a kitchen shift other than that Saturday or Sunday, some aprons are available to borrow. If you feel you absolutely need an apron on those days, consider bringing your own.

Beyond your assigned shifts, you will likely be expected to jump in and help at random times upon request. Examples include helping to unload the food truck, raising the Undome, securing flapping infrastructure during raging dust storms, and other unscheduled merriment. Participation is key to our success.

We are using the email address you originally signed up with for admission to the camp. If you wish to use a different address for the purposes of camp sign-up, please reach out to diane.t.hodgkins@gmail to notify us.

And finally, consider signing up for multiple shifts of the same role and get some ownership of it. This keeps things going even more smoothly.

Once you arrive on the Playa, go to the check-in table at the kitchen area to get your bracelet and confirm your shifts. If you are short or don't have any shifts, we'll sign you up at that point. So grab your favorite shifts now!

Direct questions or problems to Diane at [email protected]

Thanks!
